Matterhorn

The Matterhorn is the sharp, four-sided peak above Zermatt and probably the most famous mountain in the Alps. It rises on its own above the glaciers, with four steep faces and four ridges meeting at the top. Seen from the village, its tip seems to lean slightly towards you.

A little history

On 14 July 1865 Edward Whymper's party of seven reached the summit by the Hörnli ridge; on the way down a rope broke and four of them fell to their deaths. Three days later Jean-Antoine Carrel reached the top from the Italian side.

Today the Hörnli hut at 3,260 m is the base for most climbs, and the car-free village of Zermatt lies at the mountain's foot.

The booklet opens with the full story: key dates, what to look for and where to find it.

Visiting the Matterhorn

Address
Zermatt, 3920 Valais (the summit lies on the Swiss–Italian border)
Getting there
Take the train to Zermatt (drivers park in Täsch and ride the shuttle train). The church and the river are a short walk from the station.
Insider tip
For the classic view, stand on the Kirchbrücke bridge by the church in the morning sun. For a closer look, ride the Gornergrat railway; check the weather first, as the peak often hides in cloud.
